I am using DVI/VGA or a DVI to HDMI adapter and have no sound. Why?
DVI and VGA are both video connectors that do not carry sound. In order to get sound through your TV via this method, you will also need an audio cable. Most, but not all TV's will have a 3.5mm audio input connector, usually alongside one of the HDMI ports. You would need an additional 3.5mm - 3.5mm audio cable to run from the computer to the TV.
If this option is unavailable for you, it may be time to upgrade your computer. Most new computers will have HDMI or a DisplayPort output, which both carry sound. (DisplayPort requires a DP-HDMI adapter).
